I see teaching as involving a reciprocal relationship between the teacher and students. Both student and teacher should expect the best from each other.

My teaching philosophy begins with being professional at all times. I believe that students expect and desire a responsible teacher to lead the class and create an environment conducive to learning. Only in this way can the teacher expect their students to give their all and maintain a respectful atmosphere in the class. As part of this, the teacher should be well prepared before class starts and should try to anticipate potential challenges that may arise in class. Well-thought-out lesson plans can help mitigate such challenges. Students expect a smooth and well organised class and I think it is the teachers jobs to make sure that this is what is provided.

However, being professional at all times, does not mean that the teacher has to be aloof from their students. Indeed, I believe a teacher must be friendly, engaging and approachable at all times. Only when students can feel confident in class can they truly be enthusiastic and give their all. Happy and confident students make for productive students. When they are confident they don’t mind making mistakes and so engage and participate in class bringing a healthy and productive atmosphere to class. I think that it is important for the teacher to engage with students on a human level, getting to know their students well. Such bonding with students can be done through sharing ones life experiences with the class which helps enrich discussions and subject matter and helps humanise the teacher in the eyes of the students.

I try to follow this philosophy as best I can during my classes. I believe that it is only possible to expect good results from ones students if oneself holds themselves to equally high standards.
