I always use a variety of teaching methods, adapting the classes to the individual, focusing on their priorities and what they want to improve. For example, with adults, I would investigate their interests and use articles that are relevant to those interests to use for discussion and conversation. Then do some grammar exercises on areas of obvious weakness if required. My main mantra is to keep it interesting for the student so that they are engaged.
With children it is important to explore what methods work for that child, this can vary greatly between children. To make it fun and have a wide variety of methods to keep their interest and desire to learn. This may include videos, role play, comprehensions, articles on their favourite things and interspersed with grammar exercises. It is important that the pupil does the talking. It is very important to build a strong relationship with the child and make them want to see you next week, not to dread your class. Keep it light, fun and focus on the key points of grammar and vocabulary. In my experience this works and I have seen immediate improvement in my pupils who have benefitted from a personal approach to give them confidence in using the language.
I also liaise well with parents, ensuring I keep them fully informed of progress and difficulties whilst also adapting my focus to support what they are learning in English at school.
