My interest in foreign languages started early in my life when I was lucky to attend a bilingual
high school in my little hometown in Spain. At that time, I had the opportunity to study in French some of the subjects I was taking. Therefore, it was not a surprise to realize that I really wanted, not only to continue studying French at the college level, but to do it while being immersed in another foreign language and culture that I was fond of: English. After graduating with a triple major in French, International Business, and Marketing at Benedictine College (Kansas), I am now completing an MA in French at the University of Kansas.
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I am an advocate of the communicative method, which
grants students the opportunity to learn the language by using it in a communicative context.
From my experience, this is the most successful approach for teaching a second language in
light of the results and the degree of engagement students show. For example, I usually speak
the target language since day one and have learners work in pairs (to do the conversations in
French and help each other with the activities). Also, I take every opportunity to find audiovisual texts that are somehow related to the lesson in order to keep the class engaged while exposing it to real material in French. Finally, my courses include a variety of different assignments across the semester, which I carefully correct in order to provide meaningful feedback that shows students their progress in the class.
On the other hand, because I consider myself a vocational educator, I go beyond the strict
limits of my official duties to get involved at a deeper level. If, as an undergraduate student, I
resumed the French Club at my institution after several years without an organization to
represent French majors/minors at my college, I know that the impact that such actions may
have will ensure my students’ success. For example, having studied abroad in France, I know
how important the opportunity of learning a language in an immersion-based context is. Thus,
in 2022 I helped with the organization of a summer program abroad for Spanish-major students
from Benedictine College. At a smaller level, I have also organized extracurricular events and
activities at the University of Kansas to bring learners together out of their interest in French
culture, language, and literature.
I always strive to keep a good environment in my job. At KU, my attitude has been very positive
when it has come to working in teams or when receiving feedback from my supervisor or my peers. In all these processes, I think of myself as a part of a larger picture where I recognize myself as a key part of its proper function while being aware of the other parts which will help
me grow and develop through teamwork and positive and constructive feedback. This has
always made me give my best, keeping a focus on my tasks and responsibilities while being
open to change and evolve.
